How to test Wi-Fi speed
- Confirm the device is connected to the Wi-Fi network you want to test and turn off cellular fallback if necessary.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, video streams, and other heavy traffic.
- Run the internet speed test in the room where the problem normally occurs.
- Repeat the test two more times and note the middle result.
- Move close to the router and repeat with the same device.
What the comparison tells you
If the Wi-Fi speed test improves substantially near the router, the internet connection reaching the router may be healthy while wireless coverage, interference, or band selection is the problem. If performance remains poor near the router, compare with wired Ethernet where possible. A slow wired result makes the modem, router, provider, or broadband plan more likely.
Wi-Fi speed is not Wi-Fi signal strength
A Wi-Fi signal test measures radio strength, while a Wi-Fi bandwidth test measures data transfer through the wireless link and the internet path. Strong signal does not guarantee high speed: congestion, an older Wi-Fi standard, router load, channel width, and upstream broadband can still limit performance. The SpeedTest browser test measures end-to-end internet performance, not raw radio signal strength.
Why Wi-Fi speed changes by room
- Distance and walls: signal weakens as it travels, especially through dense materials.
- Frequency band: 5 GHz and 6 GHz usually offer more nearby capacity, while 2.4 GHz reaches farther but is often busier.
- Interference: neighboring networks and household electronics can compete for airtime.
- Device capability: the phone, computer, and router must support compatible Wi-Fi standards and channel widths.
- Mesh backhaul: a mesh node with a weak connection to the main router can repeat a poor link.
What is a good Wi-Fi speed?
“Good” depends on the activity and how many devices share the connection. HD video often needs roughly 5–10 Mbps per stream and 4K video often needs 25 Mbps or more. Video calls need stable upload as well as download. Online games usually use modest bandwidth but respond best to low, stable latency. Compare the result with the speed delivered near the router and with what your broadband plan can provide.
When a Wi-Fi test looks unstable
Large swings between repeated tests can indicate interference, contention, automatic band switching, background traffic, or a congested internet route.
