Internet ping test

Check latency and understand connection delay.

The browser speed test reports ping latency before measuring download and upload. Lower and more stable delay usually makes browsing, calls, and online games feel more responsive.

What is ping?

Ping is commonly used to describe the round-trip delay between a device and a destination. It is measured in milliseconds (ms). SpeedTest’s browser test times HTTPS requests to Cloudflare rather than sending low-level ICMP echo packets, so results can differ from a command-line ping test.

Ping, latency, and jitter

Latency is the time taken for data to travel to a destination and for a response to return. Ping is one method or label used to report that delay. Jitter describes variation between latency samples. A 30 ms connection that repeatedly jumps to 200 ms can feel worse than a stable 60 ms connection, especially during live audio or games.

What is a good ping speed?

LatencyGeneral interpretation
Under 30 msHighly responsive for many nearby internet services.
30–60 msResponsive for browsing, calls, and many online games.
60–100 msUsually usable, with more noticeable delay in real-time activity.
Over 100 msDelay may become obvious in calls, remote control, and fast games.

These are broad guidelines. Distance to the selected service matters, and an individual game or call may use a different route.

Why internet latency is high

  • The destination is physically far away or reached through an inefficient route.
  • Wi-Fi interference, weak signal, or retransmissions delay packets.
  • Uploads or downloads fill the connection queue, causing loaded latency or bufferbloat.
  • A VPN, relay, or security gateway adds another network hop.
  • The cellular network or local broadband segment is congested.
  • The test destination or remote service is busy.

How to test ping more reliably

  1. Pause large transfers and run several tests to establish idle latency.
  2. Start a large upload or download and test again to look for delay under load.
  3. Compare Wi-Fi near the router with Ethernet if available.
  4. Compare the general internet ping result with the specific app or game that feels slow.
  5. Test at different times to identify congestion patterns.

Browser ping versus Game Ping

The homepage latency check measures response to the speed-test endpoint. The iPhone app’s Game Ping compares HTTPS response times to public services associated with popular games and platforms. Neither result is guaranteed to equal a live match server’s latency. The game’s own network display remains the best match-specific measurement.

Does a faster download reduce ping?

Not necessarily. More bandwidth can prevent queues from filling, but raw speed and delay are different properties. A high-capacity route can still have high latency because of distance or routing. Conversely, a modest connection can feel responsive when it remains uncongested and stable.
