How to troubleshoot and improve slow Wi-Fi.
The goal is to identify whether the weak link is radio signal, local congestion, the router, or the internet service.

1. Record the real problem
Test in the room, on the device, and around the time when the issue happens. Write down download, upload, latency, and whether the problem affects one device or every device. An average taken in a different room may hide the cause.
2. Compare near the router
Use the same device and test again a few feet from the router. A large improvement points toward signal, interference, or coverage. Little improvement suggests internet service, modem, router load, or the device itself.
3. Compare Wi-Fi with another path
If possible, test a computer over Ethernet. You can also compare the iPhone on cellular data. Ethernet helps separate wireless conditions from the internet connection delivered by the provider.
4. Improve router placement
- Place the router in the open instead of inside a cabinet.
- Use a central and elevated position when possible.
- Keep it away from large metal objects and dense appliances.
- Avoid placing it directly beside sources of radio interference.
- For a mesh system, do not place a satellite where the main router’s signal is already unusable.
5. Choose the right frequency band
Higher-frequency bands such as 5 GHz and 6 GHz can provide more capacity at short range, but walls and distance weaken them sooner. The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther and supports many older devices, but it is often more crowded. Test both rather than assuming one is always better.
6. Reduce contention
Pause cloud backups, operating-system updates, large downloads, and high-resolution streams. If performance returns, the connection may be saturated. Router quality-of-service controls can prioritize interactive traffic, but configuration quality varies.
7. Check software and network layers
Temporarily compare with VPN, privacy relay, or custom DNS features disabled, if doing so is acceptable for your security needs. Restarting the router can clear a temporary fault, but recurring problems need a cause, firmware update, configuration change, or hardware replacement.
8. Review the hardware
Old routers may not support the capacity, radio bands, or number of devices in a modern home. Damaged cables and poorly negotiated Ethernet links can also cap every Wi-Fi client because the bottleneck sits upstream of the radio.
9. Retest one change at a time
Run several tests after each change and compare the middle result. Keep device, room, and background traffic consistent. This makes improvement measurable and prevents a normal fluctuation from looking like a fix.
