Measure download, upload, and latency for fiber, cable, or DSL broadband. A controlled test helps distinguish internet-service performance from local Wi-Fi limits.
How to check broadband speed accurately
- Connect a capable computer by Ethernet when possible. Otherwise, use a recent device close to the Wi-Fi router.
- Pause streaming, backups, game downloads, and software updates throughout the household.
- Disconnect a VPN or relay temporarily if your security requirements allow a direct comparison.
- Run three tests and use the middle result rather than the single fastest number.
- Repeat during the period when slow service normally occurs.
Fiber, cable, and DSL results
A fiber speed test may show similar download and upload rates on a symmetrical plan, but many fiber offers are still asymmetrical. Cable broadband often provides high download speed with lower upload capacity and can vary with neighborhood demand. DSL speed depends strongly on line length and condition. The connection type alone does not determine the exact result.
Compare the test with your broadband plan
Check whether the plan advertises “up to,” typical, minimum, or guaranteed speeds and whether the figure applies to a wired router connection. Protocol overhead and equipment limits mean an application-level result may not exactly equal the nominal link rate. For a gigabit plan, both the test device and every wired component must support more than 100 Mbps; Wi-Fi may be the bottleneck even when the line is healthy.
Download, upload, and latency each matter
Download speed affects streaming and large downloads. Upload speed affects video calls, backups, and sending files. Latency affects responsiveness. A broadband checker that reports only download speed can miss an upload or delay problem, so SpeedTest reports all three.
Why a broadband speed result is low
- Wi-Fi signal, interference, or an older wireless standard limits the local connection.
- A router port, network adapter, or cable has negotiated at 100 Mbps instead of a faster link rate.
- Other devices are using capacity during the test.
- The modem or router is overloaded, misconfigured, or due for a firmware update.
- The provider has an outage, congestion, line-quality problem, or incorrect provisioning.
- The test route or endpoint is temporarily busy.
Broadband availability is a different question
This page measures an active connection. It cannot check which providers serve an address, estimate broadband speed by postcode, or verify fiber availability in your area. Use official provider or regulator coverage tools for address-level availability, then use a speed test after service is installed.
